Department of Biology
College of Science, Engineering, and Technology
The Department of Biology is an integral component in the vibrant and esteemed College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Jackson State University, the urban university of Mississippi.
Biology is an exciting discipline, especially since it is the basic science of life and the foundation of life science studies. Also, biological sciences study programs and preparations are integral to specific health professions and careers. Courses in Biology serve as stepping stones for students preparing for careers in basic science research, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, environmental and marine sciences, in addition to many health related disciplines and professions.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Students will gain a diverse education in biology, gaining knowledge stemming from understanding molecular structures in the lab and expanding as broad as ecosystems in the outdoors.
The Department has a cadre of highly qualified and committed faculty and staff to provide “deep quality” education and training in Biology and Biology-related disciplines. In consonance with the goals of the College of Science, Engineering & Technology (CSET), and the University, the Department of Biology is deeply committed to achieving a higher level of excellence in the quality, diversity and significance of the curriculum and programs of study. The overarching goal is to provide students with a well-planned and diversified array of courses of instruction, preparing students to seek careers in basic sciences, medical and biomedical sciences, biotechnology, bioinformatics, marine and environmental sciences, public health, and other health professions.
LEARN BY DOING
Time will be spent collecting and analyzing data or running experiments using state-of-the-art equipment – not solely sitting at desks.
APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE
After completing the program, students will understand the basic biological principles, will think logically and communicate clearly within the field and to other researchers, will become conscious of social problems relevant to life sciences, and will be prepared for careers in the life sciences, teaching, and graduate studies, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, optometry, physical therapy, dental hygiene, medical technology, nursing, and medical records administration.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Biology majors have a plethora of career options after studying the molecular nature, physiological mechanisms, evolution, and physical structure of life and living organisms:
Biologist | Botanist | Zoologist | Registered Nurse |
Pharmacy Technician | Phlebotomist | Respiratory Therapist | Pharmacologist |
Biology Teacher | Environmental Scientist | Quality Control Technician | Agricultural Technician |
